Domaine Michel Gros
The Gros family's Vosne-Romanée estate — old Pinot Noir, the Clos des Réas monopole, and Burgundy made with quiet authority
Vosne-Romanée's Quiet Authority
Domaine Michel Gros is one of Burgundy's most admired family estates — a domaine that has spent three generations building a body of work defined by precision, restraint, and a deep understanding of the Vosne-Romanée terroir. Michel Gros, son of the legendary Jean Gros, took over the family's share of the domaine in the 1990s and has since established his own identity as one of the Côte de Nuits' most reliable and thoughtful producers.
The domaine's crown jewel is the Clos des Réas — a 2.12-hectare monopole Premier Cru in Vosne-Romanée that has been in the Gros family for generations. Enclosed by its original stone wall, the Clos des Réas produces Pinot Noir of extraordinary complexity and longevity: wines that combine the silky texture and aromatic precision of the best Vosne-Romanée with a structural backbone that allows them to age for two decades or more. It is one of the most compelling monopoles in the entire Côte de Nuits.
Beyond the Clos des Réas, Michel Gros farms parcels across a range of appellations — Chambolle-Musigny, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Gevrey-Chambertin, and Hautes-Côtes de Nuits — each vinified separately and aged according to the character of the site. The range is a masterclass in how a single domaine can express the full breadth of the Côte de Nuits without losing its essential voice.

Vosne-Romanée: Limestone, Clay, and the Heart of the Côte de Nuits
Vosne-Romanée sits at the heart of the Côte de Nuits, on a gentle east-facing slope above the village. The soils are a complex mix of limestone and clay over solid Jurassic limestone bedrock — thin enough in the Premier Cru parcels to stress the vines and concentrate the fruit, but deep enough in the village parcels to produce wines of generosity and early approachability. The Clos des Réas, enclosed by its original stone wall on the mid-slope, sits on some of the finest soils in the appellation.
The Côte d'Or escarpment provides shelter from the prevailing westerly winds, creating a microclimate that is warmer and drier than the surrounding plateau. Morning mists from the Saône plain moderate the summer heat and extend the growing season, allowing Pinot Noir to develop the aromatic complexity that distinguishes great Burgundy from merely good Burgundy. Michel Gros harvests late, waiting for full phenolic maturity before picking — a standard that requires patience in cool years but produces wines of exceptional concentration and complexity when the vintage cooperates.
The domaine's parcels in Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges offer instructive contrasts with the Vosne-Romanée wines. The Chambolle parcels, on lighter, more limestone-rich soils, produce Pinot Noir of extraordinary delicacy and floral precision — the most immediately seductive wines in the range. The Nuits-Saint-Georges parcels, on heavier clay soils, give wines of greater structure and earthiness, with a firmness in youth that softens over a decade into something of real complexity.
"The Clos des Réas is not just a vineyard. It is a conversation between the Gros family and this particular piece of Vosne-Romanée that has been going on for generations."
Winemaking: Whole-Cluster Fermentation, Old Oak, and Restraint
Michel Gros's winemaking is guided by a single principle: the wine should express the vineyard, not the cellar. Fermentation takes place in open-top wooden vats with a proportion of whole clusters — typically 20 to 40 percent, depending on the vintage and the appellation — which adds aromatic complexity and structural backbone without overwhelming the fruit. Indigenous yeasts are used throughout; no commercial yeasts, no enzymes, no concentration.
After fermentation, the wines are aged in a combination of new and used Burgundian oak barrels — typically 20 to 30 percent new oak for the village and Premier Cru wines, and up to 40 percent for the Clos des Réas in exceptional vintages. The ageing period is 15 to 18 months, followed by bottling without fining or filtration. The result is a range of wines that are precise, transparent, and built to age — wines that reward patience with a complexity that few other Burgundy producers can match at this level of the appellation hierarchy.
Wines to Know
Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Clos des Réas (Monopole)
The flagship. A 2.12-hectare walled monopole on the mid-slope of Vosne-Romanée. Silky texture, extraordinary aromatic complexity — rose, dried cherry, iron, forest floor — and a structural backbone built for 15–20 years of cellaring. One of the great monopoles of the Côte de Nuits.
Vosne-Romanée Village
The entry point to the domaine's Vosne-Romanée style. More immediately approachable than the Clos des Réas, but with the same precision and restraint. Red cherry, violet, and a mineral depth that carries the wine for a decade.
Chambolle-Musigny Village
From lighter, limestone-rich soils in Chambolle. The most delicate and floral wine in the range — raspberry, rose petal, and a silky texture that makes it the most immediately seductive of the domaine's village wines.
Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Aux Murgers
From heavy clay soils in Nuits-Saint-Georges. The most structured wine in the range — dark fruit, earth, and a firmness in youth that softens over a decade into something of real complexity.
